Plans are underway to establish a boxing gym in Labasa, aimed at reviving amateur and professional boxing in Vanua Levu. This initiative was highlighted by Labasa Town Council special administrator, Samuela Ligairi, during an interview with SUNsports last Saturday after attending the South Pacific Boxing Promotion event at Subrail Park. The resurgence of professional boxing in Labasa marks a significant return after a nine-year absence.

Ligairi stated that the council is committed to reinvigorating the sport through this new project. The proposed gym is set to be located near the botanical garden at Lions Park. Construction is expected to begin shortly, supported by potential funding from the Ministry of Local Government, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Boxing Commission of Fiji.

The planned facility will feature a boxing ring for training and will be a fully outfitted gym. Ligairi noted that the existing Nasekula Gym has limited space, and the new gym will provide a larger area to accommodate more boxing enthusiasts.

Collaborations are in progress between the LTC and the Macuata Rugby Union (MRU) to develop an expanded gym facility in town. The MRU has previously contributed to the establishment of the gym at Nasekula, with equipment supplied by the Silktails Rugby League Club. The LTC has also reached out to various Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) for support in this development.

Ligairi emphasized that this initiative would enhance the LTC’s finances while inspiring interested individuals to pursue boxing and discover their potential. He highlighted that hosting significant sporting events like the Digicel Fiji FACT football tournament, the Fiji Secondary Schools rugby competition (Vodafone Deans Trophy), and boxing promotions has revitalized the community in Vanua Levu.

“This approach benefits not only the council but also the local economy, providing opportunities for hoteliers, taxi operators, market vendors, and restaurants to gain from the increased activity,” he added.
