Boxing Revival: New Gym Planned for Labasa

Plans are underway to establish a boxing gym in Labasa aimed at revitalizing both amateur and professional boxing in Vanua Levu. This initiative was highlighted by Labasa Town Council special administrator Samuela Ligairi during an interview with SUNsports last Saturday. Ligairi attended the South Pacific Boxing Promotion program at Subrail Park, marking the return of professional boxing to Labasa after a nine-year hiatus.

Ligairi expressed that the Labasa Town Council (LTC) is focused on rejuvenating the sport through this new project. The proposed location for the gym is near the botanical garden at Lions Park. Construction is expected to commence shortly, with potential funding support from the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Boxing Commission of Fiji.

The new facility will feature a boxing ring for training and will be fully equipped. Ligairi noted the current facilities at the Nasekula Gym lack sufficient space, prompting the LTC to pursue a larger venue that can accommodate more athletes.

Collaborations are ongoing between the LTC and the Macuata Rugby Union (MRU) to develop a more expansive gym in the area. The MRU previously contributed to the gym at Nasekula through equipment donations from the Silktails Rugby League Club. Additionally, the LTC is reaching out to other non-government organizations to seek support for this development.

Ligairi stated that this initiative would also enhance the LTC’s finances and encourage more individuals to participate in boxing, helping them to tap into their potential. He emphasized that hosting major sporting events, including the Digicel Fiji FACT football tournament, the Fiji Secondary Schools rugby competition (Vodafone Deans Trophy), and boxing promotions, has revitalized the community in Vanua Levu.

“This is a holistic approach not only for the council’s benefit but for the local economy, as hoteliers, taxi operators, market vendors, and restaurants will all share in the profits,” he added.
