Plans are underway to establish a boxing gym in Labasa, aimed at revitalizing both amateur and professional boxing in Vanua Levu. This initiative was highlighted by Samuela Ligairi, the special administrator of Labasa Town Council, during an interview with SUNsports last Saturday. Ligairi participated in the South Pacific Boxing Promotion program held at Subrail Park, marking the return of professional boxing to Labasa after a nine-year hiatus.
The Labasa Town Council (LTC) aims to breathe new life into the sport through this development project. The proposed site for the gym is located near the botanical garden at Lions Park. Ligairi noted that construction will begin soon, with potential funding assistance from the Ministry of Local Government, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Boxing Commission of Fiji.
The planned facility will feature a boxing ring for training purposes and will be a fully equipped gym. Ligairi explained that the LTC decided to open a new gym due to the limited space available at the Nasekula Gym. This new space is expected to accommodate more sports enthusiasts seeking to train.
The LTC has been in talks with the Macuata Rugby Union (MRU) to facilitate the development of a larger gym in town. The MRU was instrumental in the establishment of the gym at Nasekula, equipped with contributions from the Silktails Rugby League Club. Additionally, the LTC has reached out to various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for support in this venture.
Ligairi expressed his belief that this proposed development would enhance the LTC’s financial standing, while also inspiring individuals to take up the sport and explore their potential. He emphasized that hosting significant sporting events, such as the Digicel Fiji FACT football tournament, the Fiji Secondary Schools rugby competition (Vodafone Deans Trophy), and boxing promotions, has revitalized the community in Vanua Levu.
He remarked, “This is a holistic approach, not just for the council’s benefit, but for the local economy as well, with hoteliers, taxi operators, market vendors, and restaurants all reaping the rewards.”
