Two members of the Commission of Inquiry investigating the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayed Haider, previously known as Nathan Singh, have resigned from their positions. Former Republic of Fiji Military Forces Land Force Commander Pita Driti and Adi Narayan, the chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji, have both stepped down, as confirmed by Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru.

Narayan stated that he excused himself from the three-member investigating team to ensure the inquiry’s transparency and independence. He mentioned, “I’ve set up the committee and I’ve excused myself, so the committee has got another member.” Driti resigned due to a perceived conflict of interest.

Saukuru clarified that decisions regarding the inquiry team are at the discretion of its individual members. He explained that he removed Narayan from the committee because he currently chairs the boxing commission, which the inquiry will also examine to prevent any conflict of interest. The final member of the Commission of Inquiry is still being confirmed, with interviews planned for Friday. Currently, Philip Eneriko, director for Youth and Sports, and lawyer Edwin Wainiqolo from Lautoka are part of the inquiry team, with Wainiqolo set to lead the efforts.

In a somber note, Haider tragically passed away after collapsing following his IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title fight on October 26. He underwent emergency surgery but remained in a coma until he died on November 10. His funeral was held shortly thereafter at Raralevu Cemetery.

On a more positive note, Narayan mentioned that boxing promotions will continue, as several promoters have renewed their licenses for the coming year. He highlighted that Bluewater Boxing Promotions is set to kick off their season with the first of several planned events, with more details expected to be announced in December. Promoter Samir Khan is anticipated to reveal his next boxing promotion shortly, aiming to maintain enthusiasm and support for the sport amidst this challenging time.

This inquiry presents an opportunity for the boxing community in Fiji to address safety concerns and reinforce protocols to better protect athletes, ensuring that their well-being is a top priority in future events.
