The Commission of Inquiry (C.O.I) is currently facing significant challenges while investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider. This information was disclosed by C.O.I chairman Edwin Wainiqolo during a recent press conference held at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Nadi.
The concerns arose after directors of South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP), Mohammed Shameem and Fred Chand, opted to retain legal counsel. Wainiqolo emphasized that the commission is now coordinating with their legal representatives to facilitate the involvement of the promoters.
He stated, “We encountered some unanticipated turbulence. Engaging legal representation is within their rights, and we respect that.” Ongoing negotiations aim to establish a convenient time for the promoters to be interviewed.
Shameem, speaking from Vancouver, Canada, expressed his willingness to cooperate fully, indicating, “I have nothing to hide, but I want the interview to occur with my lawyers present.” Despite his eagerness, he noted some communication issues concerning the scheduling of the interview.
Both Shameem and Chand asserted their commitment to transparency. Chand highlighted SPBP’s contributions to the sport, noting that they have organized 19 promotions across the country, paying local fighters well and attracting international talent even amidst the challenges posed by COVID-19.
Wainiqolo also highlighted difficulties the C.O.I faces with the International Boxing Organisation (IBO), which sanctioned the fight involving Haider. He mentioned the commission’s reliance on IBO’s guidelines for handling the fight’s sanctioning.
The C.O.I has set a deadline of 30 days to complete investigations, with an extension granted to ensure comprehensive reporting. Wainiqolo stated that if the promoters’ legal counsel fails to cooperate within this timeframe, the commission will proceed based on the gathered information.
This situation underscores the critical importance of accountability and thorough investigative processes within the sports domain. While the inquiry faces its hurdles, the commitment of those involved to seek the truth demonstrates a dedication to ensuring fairness and transparency in professional boxing.
In summary, the C.O.I is navigating through complexities in its investigation into the death of Ubayd Haider, with legal counsel now involved, highlighting the collective effort to promote a fair and thorough review of the case. All parties seem committed to resolving the matter positively, emphasizing the integrity of the sport and the welfare of its athletes.
