Osea Nanovu, a local boxing coach from Yasawa-i-Rara, has embarked on a transformative journey after overcoming challenges from a troubled youth. Exposed to boxing from a young age through family involvement, he recognized the sport’s potential for positive change after struggling with peer pressure, alcohol, and poor choices that hindered his athletic aspirations.

Reflecting on his past, Nanovu stated, “I realized that because of my habits, I couldn’t live my dreams.” This revelation led him to commit to helping others, particularly young people facing difficulties at home. His mission included coaching and guiding local boxers to help them turn their lives around through the sport.

Since becoming a coach, he has contributed to significant achievements in boxing. In 2015, he joined the Fiji Amateur Boxing coaching team, guiding three boxers who won silver medals at the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea, despite not receiving financial compensation for his work. His focus has always been on developing talent and imparting life lessons through the sport.

Today, Nanovu trains promising young boxers like Mikaele Ravalaca and Sera Bolatini, who are set to compete in the ZEG Kings Boxing Promotion event at the Vodafone Arena in Suva. His advice to youth emphasizes the importance of setting goals and striving for success rather than succumbing to negative influences. “I’ve seen many i-Taukei youths fall short in life, so I always encourage my boxers to be someone that breaks that cycle,” he shared.

Nanovu’s approach aligns with recent trends among young boxers in Fiji who highlight the importance of discipline and personal growth through boxing. Similar to Mikaele Ravalaca’s advocacy against drug use, Nanovu emphasizes boxing as a constructive outlet for youth, steering them toward healthier lifestyles and personal achievement.

Through his coaching and mentorship, Nanovu has seen some of his trainees go on to serve in positions like the Police Force and the British Army, reflecting a positive trajectory for many young athletes in the region. His dedication to the sport and his community exemplifies the potential of boxing as a transformative vehicle for youth empowerment and growth.

The narrative of Osea Nanovu stands as a testament to the resilience of individuals who can turn their lives around and inspire the next generation in Fiji’s boxing landscape.
