Australia’s female super welterweight boxer Connie Chan held a successful coaching clinic at the Raiwaqa Rugby Club House in Suva, demonstrating her commitment to developing local talent. Chan, originally from the Gold Coast, reflected on her journey, noting that she began as a trainer under Jai Opetaia’s father, who is the current world cruiserweight champion.
The event, supported by the Boxing Commission of Fiji and Zeg Kings Promotion, received appreciation from RRCH official Marika Yalimaiwai, highlighting the supportive environment for various sports at Raiwaqa, which now includes a revival of its boxing club. Chan contributed to the club by donating two pairs of gloves and other boxing equipment, which has helped establish the club’s boxing team.
Looking ahead, Chan is set to face Fiji’s Sera Bolatini for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Oceania super welterweight title at the Vodafone Arena in Suva tomorrow. Bolatini has made waves in the boxing scene, transitioning from rugby with aspirations to make history by being the first Fijian female boxer to compete for a title in a major bout. The excitement surrounding this match reflects a growing interest in women’s boxing in Fiji and is seen as a pivotal moment for the sport in the region.
Events like Chan’s clinic and the upcoming title fight are expected to inspire future generations of female boxers, showcasing the potential for greater representation and opportunities within the sport. With local support and increasing involvement in women’s boxing, there is a promising outlook for the future of boxing in Fiji.
