In 1977, a significant conflict arose between the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association of Fiji (PBWAF) and veteran trainer John Ramos, nearly preventing him from cornering boxer Sakaraia Ve in his match against Samoan contender Ali Afakasi. This incident is detailed in Ramos’ upcoming book, “Maker of Champions,” set for release on Saturday.
Afakasi, who was based in New Zealand, was rated in the Commonwealth’s welterweight division and was viewed as a critical stepping stone for Ve on his way to a Commonwealth title that had been planned a year prior. Notably, Afakasi had won the South Seas welterweight title in 1974 and held various titles, making him a formidable opponent.
Despite being under suspension by PBWAF, Ramos made the decision to support Ve in the fight regardless of the ban. Ve unexpectedly sent a letter to PBWAF, stating that his chief trainer would not be in his corner, a move that surprised PBWAF secretary Mumtaz Ali. Ali commented that Ve’s decision was wise, as sticking with Ramos could have compromised his boxing career.
However, Ve clarified that the absence of Ramos did not mark the end of their partnership. Recognizing the importance of the match, both trainer and boxer agreed to address the issue proactively. Ramos ultimately chose to apologize to PBWAF in order to gain reinstatement, acknowledging the significance of having his trainer while preparing for the fight.
After Ramos’ apology, PBWAF lifted his suspension, much to the relief of both Ramos and Ve’s camp. The event attracted over 300 fans from Ve’s community to support him.
As the two boxers faced off, the 30-year-old Afakasi, who held an impressive fight record of 27 wins, 5 losses, and 1 draw, was an experienced competitor, significantly older than 22-year-old Ve, who entered with a record of 17 wins and 1 loss. The bout concluded with Ve achieving victory through a sixth-round technical knockout, after inflicting a notable cut on Afakasi and causing a nosebleed.
Ramos noted that this victory led PBWAF’s Ali to engage the British Boxing Board of Control about a potential Commonwealth title opportunity for Ve, indicating a bright future for the young boxer.
This remarkable story not only highlights the complexities and challenges faced by athletes and their trainers but also underscores the resilience and determination required to succeed in the sport. With the victory, it’s clear that the dedication shown by both Ve and Ramos can pave the way for future successes in boxing.
By overcoming personal and professional hurdles, this partnership illustrates the powerful spirit of collaboration in sports, providing hope for aspiring athletes who may face similar adversities.
