A significant dispute arose between the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association of Fiji (PBWAF) and veteran trainer John Ramos, nearly preventing him from cornering boxer Sakaraia Ve in his 1977 fight against Ali Afakasi. This story is detailed in Ramos’ upcoming book, ‘Maker of Champions.’
Afakasi, originally from Samoa and residing in New Zealand, was a notable contender in the Commonwealth’s welterweight division and was a crucial step for Ve on his journey toward a Commonwealth title, which had been scheduled well in advance. Afakasi had an impressive track record, including winning the South Seas welterweight title in 1974 and holding multiple regional titles.
Despite being suspended by PBWAF, Ramos chose to proceed with the fight. Ve communicated with PBWAF, surprising secretary Mumtaz Ali by indicating that Ramos would not be in his corner during the match. Ali acknowledged that Ve’s initiative was wise, indicating it could have threatened Ve’s boxing career had he remained loyal to Ramos under the suspension. Nevertheless, Ve expressed that this was not the end of his partnership with Ramos.
Ve explained that the decision to keep Ramos out of the corner was strategic, as they believed that the association might reject the fight if Ramos were involved. Recognizing the importance of the match, they resolved to take this necessary approach.
Ultimately, Ramos made the decision to apologize to PBWAF, thus facilitating his return to Ve’s corner for the significant fight. Following an urgent meeting, PBWAF lifted Ramos’ suspension, much to his relief and that of his camp.
On the day of the fight, around 300 supporters from Ve’s hometown gathered to cheer for him. Despite being eight years younger, Ve faced a seasoned opponent in Afakasi, whose impressive record included several gold medals from the South Pacific Games. However, Ve emerged victorious with a sixth-round technical knockout, after delivering a decisive blow that resulted in a cut above Afakasi’s eye and began a noticeable nosebleed.
Ramos noted that following the victory, PBWAF’s Mumtaz Ali reached out to the British Boxing Board of Control to advocate for Ve’s chances at a Commonwealth title shot, a promising prospect for the rising star.
This story is not just about a momentary dispute but highlights the resilience and determination of both the trainer and the boxer. It serves as a reminder of the intricate dynamics within professional sports and the importance of collaboration and teamwork, even in the face of adversity. The outcome not only marked a significant moment in Ve’s career but also set the stage for future opportunities, inspiring many in the boxing community.
