A 45-year-old man has been taken into custody following the alleged fatal stabbing of a farmer on Boxing Day in the Batinivuriwai Settlement, located in Wainunu, Bua, on the island of Vanua Levu. Jonasa Matakibau appeared at the Savusavu Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Magistrate Panapasa Tawake, where the case was officially heard.
Authorities have transferred the case to the Labasa High Court, where it is scheduled for a hearing on January 6. Matakibau is charged with one count of murder in connection with the incident.
According to police reports, the victim’s identity has not been disclosed, but he was reportedly involved in a violent confrontation at the bus shelter in the Batinivuriwai Settlement. The conflict swiftly escalated into a physical brawl, during which the victim sustained a fatal stab wound to the chest. He was subsequently found lying by the roadside, and despite urgent efforts to transport him to the Wainunu Health Centre, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
This tragic incident underscores the importance of addressing issues of violence and conflict resolution within communities.
