Police have apprehended 23 individuals for driving under the influence as they intensified road operations to promote public safety during the Boxing Day festivities.
Among those arrested, 19 were taken into custody in the Suva corridors, where law enforcement conducted 171 Random Breath Tests as part of a comprehensive traffic enforcement initiative. In the Western Division, particularly in Nadi, four drivers faced similar charges.
Authorities emphasize that these arrests underscore a concerning disregard for road safety, especially during the holiday season when traffic typically surges as families travel to celebrate together. In response, law enforcement has committed to maintaining and even bolstering their presence on the roads across the country to deter reckless driving and ensure the safety of all road users.
Officials are encouraging the public to make responsible choices, plan their journeys carefully, and refrain from driving after consuming alcohol to help prevent unnecessary accidents and fatalities during this festive time. The emphasis on responsibility and heightened law enforcement illustrates a commitment to safeguard community well-being, promoting a safer holiday season for everyone.
