Confusion arose recently following comments made by Adi Narayan, the chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF), during a press conference. He stated that promoter Fred Chand had been interviewed by the Commission of Inquiry. However, Chand, from his base in Sydney, Australia, clarified that he did not attend the scheduled interview due to a request from his lawyer.

Chand insisted that his legal rights are being respected and that his lawyer will accompany him during the interview. He remains committed to cooperating with the inquiry and looks forward to providing his account alongside SPBP director Mohammed Shameem.

This investigation is part of ongoing inquiries into the tragic passing of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider, who collapsed in the ring following his fight on October 26 in Nadi, an event that was promoted by South Pacific Boxing Promotion (SPBP).

Narayan and board member Eroni Loganimoce called the press conference to clarify the situation regarding the ongoing investigation and the recent suspension of SPBP’s license. Loganimoce disclosed that any reinstatement of the promoter’s license will rest on the findings of the Commission of Inquiry. He further mentioned that there are concerns regarding Chand’s conduct on social media, which allegedly goes against the terms of the promoter’s agreement.

Loganimoce emphasized that the promoter’s license is renewed annually, and he expressed that Chand should have addressed any grievances with the board directly rather than publicly airing them on social media.

In light of recent events, the BCF has decided to reinforce conditions surrounding future boxing programs to ensure the safety and integrity of the sport. Narayan stated that while the investigation is still ongoing, they aim to have a final report before the end of the month. He acknowledged the contributions of SPBP to the boxing community, encouraging them to collaborate with the BCF in a respectful manner.

Looking ahead, Narayan mentioned that Blue Water Promotions is set to begin next year’s boxing program in February and noted that interest from two new individuals in applying for promoters’ licenses is a positive sign for the future of boxing in the region.

This situation highlights the importance of accountability within sports organizations and the necessity of maintaining professionalism and communication. The ongoing investigation, while unfortunate, serves as a critical opportunity for the BCF to enhance safety standards and reinforce the integrity of boxing in Fiji.
