A large gathering of mourners convened at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday to honor the memory of Fiji’s super featherweight and lightweight champion, Ubayd Haider. The attendees included notable figures such as Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua, and other prominent members of the boxing community, family, and friends.

Haider, formerly known as Nathan Singh, passed away late Sunday night after spending over two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit at Lautoka Aspen Hospital. His health deterioration followed a TKO loss to Runqi Zhou on October 26 during an International Boxing Association (IBO) Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title match.

Among those expressing condolences was Mohammed Shameem, a director of South Pacific Boxing Promotions, who remembered Haider as a figure of kindness and strength in the boxing world. He emphasized the importance of carrying forward the lessons learned from Haider’s character and contributions.

Haider’s brother, Sebastian Singh, noted the outpouring of support for their family during this difficult time. He revealed that despite being unwell leading up to the fight, Haider displayed remarkable determination, pushing through until the ninth round, despite feeling the pressure to compete despite his condition.

Former rugby star Sonny Bill Williams conveyed his heartfelt condolences from Sydney, highlighting Haider’s significant impact on Fiji boxing. Mohammed Iliyas, who brought Williams to Fiji for a fight event, echoed the sentiment of loss felt by the boxing community.

Minister Saukuru assured Haider’s family that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted to clarify the circumstances leading to Haider’s health decline. Haider was laid to rest at the Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu.

This heartfelt gathering not only reflects the profound impact Ubayd Haider had on his community but also serves as a reminder of the spirit of resilience and camaraderie that boxing fosters. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of athletes in Fiji.
