Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, delivered a heartfelt eulogy for the late boxer Ubayd Haider, highlighting the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him. Speaking at the FMF gymnasium, an emotional Saukuru expressed that Haider would be fondly remembered not only for his achievements in boxing but also for his roles as a son, brother, father, and friend.
“May we find peace in the knowledge that he belongs to the Lord,” the Minister said, as he invited everyone to remember the spirit and passion Haider had for the sport that shaped his life. He made a sincere appeal for comfort for Haider’s family, reminding them that the memories of their loved one would live on in the hearts of many.
Ubayd Haider, who was formerly known as Nathan Singh, tragically passed away after a TKO loss in his fight against Australia-based Runqi for the IBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title on October 26. Following the match, at just 25 years old, Haider collapsed and was rushed to Lautoka Aspen Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
This tragic loss serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in combat sports. However, it also emphasizes the community’s support and love for athletes like Haider, whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations. As fans and loved ones mourn, they can take solace in the enduring influence and memories he left behind.
The boxing community, alongside the broader public, will remember Ubayd Haider not only for his prowess in the ring but also as a vibrant individual who touched many lives during his time.
