FASANOC chief executive Vanessa Kilner conveyed a powerful message of resilience to the Fijiana 7s team during a thanksgiving event for Team Fiji, celebrating their participation in the Olympic Games in Paris.
Fiji achieved a commendable silver medal, finishing 74th among 84 competing countries. Kilner praised the athletes across various disciplines, including taekwondo, athletics, swimming, table tennis, judo, sailing, and both men’s and women’s rugby sevens, for their dedication and effort against some of the world’s top athletes.
While some losses were more disappointing than others, Kilner emphasized that these experiences are a fundamental aspect of the Games. She commended the women’s rugby team for their achievements, reminding them that both wins and losses are components of the sport.
She encouraged the athletes to view their setbacks as opportunities for growth as they look towards the next four years. “What matters the most is how you get up and how you’re going to bounce back and become at the top of the table again,” she remarked.
Among the athletes, table tennis player Vicky Wu attracted the interest of a Japanese coach who recognized his potential, suggesting that with commitment he could excel in the sport. Meanwhile, young talents Tolu Young, Anahira McCutcheon, Lolohea Naitasi, and Gerard Takayawa also demonstrated promise that could enhance Fiji’s standing in future Olympic events.
The thanksgiving celebration took place at the Holiday Inn in Suva, attended by FASANOC staff, Fiji National Sports Commission chief executive Peter Mazey, several athletes, and sponsors.
