Losses are an inevitable aspect of sports, and the ability to rise again is what truly counts. This sentiment was expressed by FASANOC chief executive Vanessa Kilner to the Fijiana 7s team during a recent thanksgiving event for Team Fiji.
FASANOC organized this celebration to honor the Team Fiji athletes who competed at the Olympic Games in Paris, where Fiji secured a silver medal out of 84 participating countries.
Kilner, who witnessed the athletes’ performances across various sports including taekwondo, athletics, swimming, table tennis, judo, sailing, and both men’s and women’s rugby sevens, commended their efforts against some of the finest athletes globally. While some losses were more disappointing than others, she emphasized that such experiences are an integral part of the Games.
“Our women’s rugby team, you still made us proud. You’ve made it to the Olympics; losses are part of the game, and winning is part of the game,” Kilner stated. She expressed that these setbacks can pave the way for new opportunities for growth and improvement over the next four years.
“What matters most is how you get back up, and how you’re going to bounce back to claim your position at the top again. I look forward to witnessing your progress,” she added.
During the event, Vicky Wu caught the attention of a Japanese table tennis coach, who recognized the young athlete’s potential and encouraged him to stay committed to the sport. Meanwhile, younger athletes Tolu Young, Anahira McCutcheon, Lolohea Naitasi, and Gerard Takayawa showcased their own potentials, which, if nurtured, could lead Fiji to significant success in future Olympics.
The thanksgiving celebration took place at the Holiday Inn in Suva, attended by FASANOC staff, Fiji National Sports Commission chief executive Peter Mazey, several athletes, and sponsors.
