A recent meeting focused on the expansion of women’s health services in Fiji, particularly improving screening programs for cervical and breast cancer. Minister for Women Sashi Kiran and Fiji Cancer Society Chief Executive Belinda Chan delved into strategies to enhance outreach for these essential health services, ensuring that more women gain access to vital screenings.
During the meeting, Chan shared updates on the Fiji Cancer Society’s progress, including their recent success at the 7th National Women’s Expo, which saw an increase in women seeking cancer screenings and health information. Both Kiran and Chan emphasized the urgent need to raise awareness among women about prioritizing their health, recognizing that improved health outcomes for women not only benefit them individually but also strengthen their families and communities.
The push for enhanced screening programs aligns with previous initiatives aimed at tackling the pressing issue of late-stage cancer diagnoses, which have been shown to result in lower survival rates. Shweta Kapoor, a Program Officer at the Fiji Cancer Society, highlighted that many young women in Fiji continue to be affected by cancer due to delays in diagnosis, underscoring the critical nature of early detection.
With over 1,400 new cancer cases diagnosed annually in Fiji, the call for education and proactive health management is more necessary than ever. Programs focusing on health awareness among women are vital as they seek to transform the narrative surrounding cancer and encourage earlier detection and informed health decisions.
Fostering an environment where regular screenings are normalized is instrumental in combating cancer. As the community rallies around these initiatives, there is hope for a brighter future marked by increased health awareness and proactive measures leading to improved outcomes for all Fijians facing cancer.
This continued commitment from officials and organizations like the Fiji Cancer Society sends a positive message: with heightened efforts in education and outreach, the prioritization of women’s health can become an integral part of the health landscape in Fiji.
