In an effort to combat labor shortages in the sugarcane farming sector, the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar has introduced support for sugarcane planters and fertilizer applicators in the Western Division by providing five Tractor Service Providers (TSPs). This initiative was launched during a handover ceremony in Ba and is part of the Ministry’s Farm Mechanisation grant program.
Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, emphasized that enhancing productivity in the sugar industry is paramount, especially in the face of labor shortages and rising production costs. He stated, “We are prioritizing farm mechanisation as a crucial part of our strategy to boost sugar productivity,” highlighting the objective of modernizing the industry and increasing yields while reducing expenses.
Noa Kautoga, president of the Varavu Farmers’ Cooperative, praised the government for its continued support towards sugarcane farmers, stating that the mechanisation program is vital for adapting modern techniques to tackle labor shortages, a significant hurdle for farmers today.
Singh further explained that the government is working towards creating a more sustainable and competitive sugar industry through these initiatives. Under the farm mechanisation grant program, a substantial 50 percent subsidy is provided on machinery, making it more accessible for TSPs to offer services to farmers at reduced rates, particularly for cane planting and fertilization.
This initiative signifies a positive move towards modernizing the agricultural sector, and with the continued support and investment in mechanization, the sugarcane industry could see improved productivity and sustainability in the long run.
