In response to the ongoing labor shortages faced by sugarcane farms, the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar has introduced a significant support initiative by providing five Tractor Service Providers (TSPs) in the Western Division. This assistance has been made possible through the Ministry’s Farm Mechanisation grant programme, which aims to modernize sugar farming practices.

The TSPs, selected from the regions of Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, received farm machinery directly aimed at enhancing productivity within the sugar industry. During the ceremony for the machinery handover in Ba, Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, emphasized that this initiative is crucial for addressing the dual challenges of labor shortages and rising production costs.

Mr. Singh stated, “Recognising the need to tackle labor shortages and high production costs, we are prioritising farm mechanisation as a key part of our strategy to boost sugar productivity.” This approach is seen as a vital step towards modernizing the sector, lowering production costs, and ultimately improving yields for farmers.

Noa Kautoga, president of the Varavu Farmers’ Cooperative, expressed gratitude on behalf of the farmers for the government’s continuous support through various initiatives. He noted that the mechanisation programme not only helps facilitate modern farming techniques but also plays a significant role in mitigating the labor challenges faced.

The government has implemented a 50% subsidy as part of the farm mechanisation grant programme, making it easier for TSPs to access the necessary equipment at affordable rates. These providers are expected to offer their services to farmers at subsidised rates, focusing on essential activities like cane planting and fertiliser application.

This initiative represents a positive shift towards creating a more sustainable and competitive sugar industry, showcasing the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and enhancing the agricultural landscape.

Implementing these mechanisation efforts could drive growth within the sugar industry and pave the way for better economic prospects in the sector. By prioritizing modern techniques and accessibility, the ministry is fostering an environment where farmers can thrive despite challenges.
