The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force are collaborating to bolster road safety through increased traffic patrols and checkpoints in areas recognized as high-risk and prone to accidents. This initiative aims to monitor and manage the safety of all road users effectively.
Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport Minister, Filipe Tuisawau, reported concerning developments after a serious traffic incident on Kings Road at Vitogo. The accident involved a bus and a twin cab utility vehicle, resulting in 18 individuals being hospitalized at Lautoka Hospital. Minister Tuisawau expressed his condolences to the injured and their families, emphasizing the crucial need for heightened awareness and compliance with road safety regulations by all drivers.
The ongoing National Joint Operations Order, which includes collaboration among the LTA, Fiji Police, and Municipal Council enforcement officers, aims to enhance road safety measures, minimize road fatalities, and ensure strict adherence to traffic laws. This initiative is particularly crucial as the festive season approaches, a time when road traffic tends to increase due to holiday activities, family reunions, and celebrations. The operation will run from November 1 to January 31 of the following year.
Notably, as of November 11, road fatalities have decreased to 51, a significant reduction from 71 during the same period last year. This positive trend highlights the effectiveness of ongoing road safety efforts.
