The Ministry of Sugar Industry is working to improve sugarcane productivity and support farmers in the Northern Division by assisting 22 farmers in Labasa and 36 in Seaqaqa through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program. This initiative offers eligible farmers financial aid covering 30 percent of lease renewal costs, up to a maximum of $7,500.
During a ceremony to hand over grant agreements to the farmers, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh emphasized that the program is designed to alleviate financial pressures on farmers and stimulate interest among both new and existing farmers to increase sugarcane production. Singh highlighted the importance of reviving the sugar industry, which is the largest sector in the northern division.
The government introduced this support in response to farmers’ concerns regarding the escalating costs associated with lease renewal premiums. Additionally, two farmers from Seaqaqa received assistance for farm mechanization, specifically for acquiring a cane planter and a fertilizer applicator.
The Ministry plans to extend similar support to sugarcane farmers in the western division, with a total of 177 sugarcane farmers from both the north and western regions having benefited from this program so far.
Seaqaqa farmer Mohammed Janab expressed gratitude for the government initiative, noting that the financial assistance has provided significant relief for him and his family, as the government covered $5,000 of his $15,000 premium.
