The Health Ministry is urging parents to promote healthy eating habits within their families as a means to improve oral health and reduce the increasing strain on dental care systems across the country. Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the Acting Chief Medical Advisor, emphasized the importance of instilling good habits in children from an early age, which not only leads to better oral health but also positively impacts mental health and social interactions.
Dr. Cikamatana highlighted the role of teaching children essential oral hygiene practices, such as regular tooth brushing, to prevent cavities and dental diseases. She advocates for mothers to prioritize their babies’ oral hygiene as an integral part of healthy living.
In response to ongoing oral health challenges, the Health Ministry is enhancing its community outreach initiatives and updating public health strategies to bolster oral health across diverse age groups, particularly school-aged children. These programs are designed for various educational levels, including kindergarten and grades one, six, and eight.
Venina Wati, the Acting Divisional Dental Officer, reinforced these points, stating that improving access to dental care, particularly in underserved regions, is vital. This effort aligns with global health initiatives, such as World Oral Health Day, which emphasizes the connection between oral health and overall physical and mental wellness.
Previous initiatives by the Health Ministry have aimed to dissuade unhealthy dietary habits that adversely affect oral health. By focusing on education and collaboration with community leaders, schools, and organizations, the goal is to cultivate a supportive environment that encourages healthy practices from a young age.
The collective efforts of the Ministry and the community signal a promising path toward a healthier future, aimed at decreasing the prevalence of dental diseases and enhancing the overall well-being of communities. This proactive approach reflects a strong commitment to improving health standards and raising awareness about the importance of oral care, ultimately nurturing healthier generations.
