Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki has emphasized the need for a significant enhancement of local netball tournaments this year. She noted that improving competition at the local level is essential for assembling a broader training squad for national teams.
Sorovaki stated, “We need to intensify our competitions to allow for selection of players into the high-performance teams.” She highlighted the importance of creating clear pathways from club-level competitions to national representation, ensuring that the games played are of high quality. This, she believes, will provide a larger pool of players for selection across various levels.
Additionally, she stressed the importance of grassroots development, indicating that the federation will continue to collaborate closely with all relevant stakeholders. “Our focus remains on assisting our districts in their work on the ground running games and capacity building for members,” she added.
As a part of this initiative, the Fiji Pearls’ extended squad is set to regroup for fitness testing today at the HPU Gym in Laucala, starting at 8:30 am. A total of 56 players have been selected for the extended squad, which will be guided by interim coach Jioweli Vakamoce.
This focus on local competition and talent development reflects a hopeful future for netball in Fiji, potentially leading to stronger national performances and greater opportunities for emerging athletes to shine on both local and international stages.
