The Ministry of Sugar Industry is taking steps to improve sugarcane productivity and support farmers in the Northern Division by assisting 22 farmers in Labasa and 36 in Seaqaqa through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program. This initiative provides eligible farmers with financial aid covering 30 percent of their lease renewal costs, up to a maximum of $7,500.
During a recent event to distribute grant agreements, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh emphasized the program’s goal of alleviating financial pressures on farmers while encouraging both new and existing growers to increase sugarcane production. Singh pointed out that the sugar industry is a crucial sector in the Northern Division and requires revitalization.
The government introduced this support in response to farmers’ concerns regarding the steep premiums associated with lease renewals. Additionally, two farmers from Seaqaqa received support through the Farm Mechanization Grant for purchasing a cane planter and fertilizer applicator.
The Ministry also plans to extend assistance to sugarcane farmers in the Western Division through this program. To date, 177 sugarcane farmers in both the northern and western divisions have benefited from the initiative.
Seaqaqa farmer Mohammed Janab expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts, stating that the financial support has provided significant relief for him and his family, as the government covered $5,000 of his $15,000 lease premium.
