There is a pressing need to boost the number of businesses owned by iTaukei individuals in Fiji, according to Ifereimi Vasu, the Minister for iTaukei Affairs. Speaking at the inauguration of two business empowerment projects in Naduri, Macuata, he highlighted that only five percent of businesses in Fiji are owned and operated by native Fijians.

Mr. Vasu emphasized the importance of providing more support and encouragement to increase this percentage. He acknowledged the need for a shift in mindset, noting that there have been instances where individuals have attempted to undermine others’ successes.

He further elaborated on the various factors contributing to the low number of iTaukei entrepreneurs and stressed that unity is essential. “We need to work together, explore new opportunities, and encourage fellow Fijians to achieve success,” he said.

During the launch of the Korovou Homestay and Crumbs Bakery Café, Mr. Vasu shared details about additional projects planned for the northern region, indicating a commitment to fostering a more inclusive business environment for iTaukei people.

This initiative reflects a positive outlook toward empowering the local community and improving economic diversity in Fiji. By creating a supportive ecosystem, there’s hope for an increase in entrepreneurial ventures that will ultimately uplift the iTaukei population.

The article underscores the crucial need for collective effort and encouragement, potentially leading to a brighter economic future for iTaukei business owners in Fiji.
