The Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, emphasized the urgent need to promote business ownership among iTaukei in Fiji. Speaking at the launch of two empowerment projects in Naduri, Macuata, Mr. Vasu highlighted that only five percent of businesses in the country are owned and operated by native Fijians.
He called for increased support and encouragement to foster growth in this area, stressing that a change in mindset is essential. Mr. Vasu acknowledged the challenges faced by aspiring iTaukei entrepreneurs, including societal attitudes where success can sometimes be met with skepticism or discouragement.
“We need to work together in unity, explore new opportunities, and encourage Fijians to succeed in life,” he stated, underlining the importance of collaboration in overcoming obstacles.
During the event, which marked the launch of the Korovou Homestay and Crumbs Bakery Café, the Minister also mentioned several upcoming projects aimed at supporting business initiatives in the North.
This initiative represents a hopeful step towards empowering iTaukei shareholders and enhancing their presence in the business landscape of Fiji. By focusing on unity and collaboration, there is potential for a more vibrant and diversified economic environment that benefits everyone in the community. As these projects take shape, they could serve as inspiring examples for future entrepreneurs within the iTaukei community.
