The Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, has emphasized the urgent need to boost the number of businesses owned by iTaukei people in Fiji. Speaking during the launch of two empowerment business projects in Naduri, Macuata on Friday, he highlighted that currently, only five percent of businesses in the country are owned and operated by native Fijians.
Vasu stressed the importance of providing more support and encouragement to increase this figure. He also pointed out the necessity of changing mindsets, as there are instances where individuals may undermine those who are achieving success.
He acknowledged that several factors contribute to the low number of iTaukei entrepreneurs and urged for a collective effort to explore new opportunities, fostering an environment that encourages Fijians to thrive. During the event, which marked the opening of the Korovou Homestay and Crumbs Bakery Café, Vasu also mentioned various projects planned for the North aimed at economic empowerment.
This initiative can be seen as a pivotal step toward improving the representation of iTaukei in the business landscape, ultimately leading to greater economic inclusivity and empowerment in Fiji.
In summary, Vasu’s call to action highlights a critical moment for fostering entrepreneurship among iTaukei, which, if embraced, could lead to a significant positive change in the community’s economic standing.
