Fiji’s Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, has emphasized the pressing need to enhance the representation of iTaukei-owned businesses in the country. Speaking at the launch of two new business projects in Naduri, Macuata, Vasu revealed that only five percent of businesses in Fiji are owned and operated by native Fijians.
Mr. Vasu stressed the importance of providing support and fostering encouragement to increase this percentage. He pointed out that changing mindsets is crucial, as there are instances where individuals attempt to undermine the success of others.
He identified several factors contributing to the low number of iTaukei entrepreneurs in Fiji. To address this, Mr. Vasu called for unity and collaboration among Fijians, urging them to explore new opportunities and support one another in achieving success.
The launch of the Korovou Homestay and Crumbs Bakery Café exemplifies the types of projects aimed at empowering local communities and stimulating business ownership among iTaukei people in the region.
This initiative is hopeful as it signals a commitment to fostering entrepreneurship among native Fijians, which could lead to greater economic sustainability and cultural empowerment within the community.
By encouraging collaboration and a supportive environment, there is potential for a significant increase in iTaukei business ownership in the near future.
