The Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, has emphasized the urgent need to boost the number of businesses owned by iTaukei individuals in Fiji. Speaking at the launch of two business empowerment projects in Naduri, Macuata, he pointed out that a mere five percent of businesses in the country are owned and operated by native Fijians.

Mr. Vasu highlighted the importance of providing more support and encouragement to foster growth in this area. He noted that a shift in mindset is essential, as there are instances where some individuals discourage others who are striving for success. This cultural barrier, along with other factors, contributes to the low representation of iTaukei entrepreneurs in the business sector.

In his address, Mr. Vasu called for unity among Fijians, urging communities to explore new opportunities and support one another’s endeavors. Furthermore, he shared information about various projects aimed at enhancing economic growth in the Northern region of Fiji.

This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the value of diversity in business ownership and highlights the potential for increased economic empowerment among iTaukei communities. With collaborative efforts and a positive mindset, there is hope for a flourishing network of iTaukei entrepreneurs in the future.
