The Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, has emphasized the urgent need to boost the number of businesses owned by iTaukei individuals in Fiji. During the launch of two business empowerment projects in Naduri, Macuata, he highlighted that a mere five percent of businesses are currently operated by native Fijians.

Mr. Vasu called for increased support and encouragement to raise this percentage, stating, “There is a need for more support and encouragement to help increase this number.” He also pointed out the necessity of a mindset shift, mentioning that some individuals tend to undermine the success of their peers.

He attributed the low representation of iTaukei businesspeople in Fiji to multiple factors and stressed the significance of collective effort, exploring new opportunities, and fostering a culture of success among Fijians.

During the event, which marked the opening of the Korovou Homestay and Crumbs Bakery Café, Mr. Vasu mentioned several upcoming projects aimed at promoting economic growth in the Northern Division.

This initiative holds promise for enhancing business ownership among iTaukei, paving the way for greater economic independence and community development. As iTaukei entrepreneurs are given the support they need, it is hopeful that more will take the plunge into entrepreneurship, ultimately leading to a more diverse and resilient economy in Fiji.
