Fiji’s Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, has emphasized the pressing need to boost the number of businesses owned by native Fijians. Speaking at the launch of two entrepreneurship ventures—Korovou Homestay and Crumbs Bakery Café—in Naduri, Macuata, Mr. Vasu highlighted that currently, only five percent of businesses in Fiji are owned and operated by iTaukei individuals.
Mr. Vasu underscored the importance of fostering support and encouragement to elevate this figure. He pointed out that a significant cultural shift is necessary as some individuals tend to undermine their peers who are achieving success. He identifies a range of factors contributing to the low representation of iTaukei businesses in the entrepreneurial landscape.
“Collaboration and unity are essential,” he stated, calling for a collective effort to explore new opportunities and inspire Fijians to thrive. The Minister’s remarks come in light of several projects planned for the northern region, aimed at further empowering local business ownership and enhancing economic growth for native Fijians.
This approach reflects a hopeful vision for the future, as the government’s commitment to entrepreneurship could pave the way for increased iTaukei participation in the business sector, fostering a more diverse and robust economic environment in Fiji. By overcoming the cultural barriers and providing adequate support, the local community could generate not only successful businesses but also a sense of pride and unity among iTaukei people.
Summary: The Minister for iTaukei Affairs in Fiji highlighted the need to increase native Fijian business ownership, currently at only five percent. During the launch of two new ventures, he called for support, a cultural shift, and unity among Fijians to encourage economic success.
