Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki has emphasized the importance of enhancing local netball competitions this year. In a discussion about potential improvements for the sport, Sorovaki stated that strengthening tournaments across the country is essential for effectively selecting players for the national teams.

She highlighted the need for intensified competition to better identify players for high-performance teams, asserting that clear pathways from club levels to national representation must be established. “We need to ensure we are hosting and playing quality games which then allows a wider net for selection at all levels,” Sorovaki explained.

In addition, she pointed out that grassroots development plays a critical role in the sport’s growth. The federation plans to maintain close collaboration with various stakeholders to promote the development of netball at the community level. “Our focus remains on assisting our districts in their work on the ground running games and capacity building for members,” she added.

In a related event, the Fiji Pearls extended squad will undergo regrouping and fitness testing today at the HPU Gym in Laucala, starting at 8:30 AM. A total of 56 players have been selected for the extended squad, which will be under the guidance of interim head coach Jioweli Vakamoce.

This push for stronger local competitions and the emphasis on grassroots development reflect an encouraging vision for the future of netball in Fiji, aiming to elevate the standard of the sport and broaden the pool of talented players for national representation.

Summary: RubyAnn Sorovaki, president of Netball Fiji, calls for the enhancement of local competitions to improve player selection for national teams. Strengthening tournaments and focusing on grassroots development are seen as key elements in this endeavor.
