The Korotasere Police Post in Vanua Levu is struggling to ensure the safety and security of its large community of over 4,500 residents, with only five officers available to respond to increasing local demands. According to resident Rosa Chute, the post is supposed to have a staff of 11 officers, highlighting a critical shortfall in resources. Ms. Chute expressed her concerns, stating, “They simply don’t have enough resources. Even if a vehicle isn’t available, at the very least, give them a horse.” She described the challenges faced by the five officers, who must cover extensive and difficult terrain, making it nearly impossible to adequately respond to incidents, including the four thefts her family has experienced this year.

In a positive response to these concerns, Acting Commissioner of Police, Aporosa Lutunauga, assured the community that a plan is in place for enhancement. He confirmed that the Fiji Police Force will recruit 500 new officers starting with the next financial year, aiming to bolster the police presence in regions like Korotasere. He stated, “The government has done its part; now it’s up to us, the police, to follow through,” affirming that operational deployments are already being initiated in key areas.

This recruitment initiative is part of a broader effort by the Fiji Police to address significant personnel shortages highlighted in various recent discussions, particularly in light of rising crime rates. Earlier reports indicate that one police officer is currently responsible for a disproportionately high number of residents, leading to difficulties in maintaining public safety. An increased budget for the police force and enhanced recruitment strategies signify a renewed commitment to improving community relations and trust, ultimately aiming for a safer environment for all Fijians.

The proactive steps being taken to strengthen the police force’s manpower can inspire hope within communities like Korotasere, fostering an environment where safety and security can be prioritized more effectively. The focus on recruitment not only addresses immediate operational needs but also signals a dedication to long-term public safety improvements. As dialogue between the police and the community continues, there’s optimism that these measures will yield positive outcomes for residents and further reinforce community trust in law enforcement.
