Residents of Boca, Bulileka in Labasa are expressing their frustration over the ongoing issue of flash floods attributed to inadequate drainage systems in their community. Jai Karan, a long-standing resident, highlighted that the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has not addressed these drainage problems despite numerous requests for over 25 years. He stated, “Blocked drains have caused flash floods for decades. We once again urge the FRA to address this issue and help prevent flooding, which affects all our residents.”
The frequent flooding disrupts the Boca Loop Circular Road, posing challenges for motorists who risk their safety to commute during heavy rains to reach work or Labasa Town. This suburban area, located just a few kilometers from Labasa, not only grapples with the inconvenience caused by floods but also faces potential health hazards.
Vakaruru Cavuilati, the Divisional Health Inspector for Northern, has advised residents to refrain from disposing of household waste into drains and creeks, as this practice worsens blockages and heightens the risk of flooding. He warned that flooded regions can increase the prevalence of diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhoea.
The residents of Boca are calling for urgent measures to address flooding concerns and safeguard their community from further disruption and health risks. It is a pressing issue that speaks to the need for sustainable infrastructure improvements and community involvement in maintaining clean spaces.
In summary, the residents are hopeful that with continued advocacy and awareness, authorities will prioritize the necessary improvements to drainage systems, thereby mitigating flooding and enhancing the overall quality of life for the community. Such proactive measures would not only address current concerns but also prevent future health crises, fostering a safer and more resilient environment for everyone in Bulileka.
