Residents of Boca, Bulileka in Labasa are raising concerns about frequent flash floods stemming from inadequate drainage in their area. According to Jai Karan, a long-time resident, the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has not addressed the persistent drainage issues despite numerous requests over the past 25 years.
Karan emphasizes that blocked drains have contributed to flooding for decades, urging the FRA to take action to prevent further incidents that adversely affect the community. The flooding often disrupts the Boca Loop Circular Road, putting motorists at risk as they navigate treacherous conditions to reach their jobs or Labasa Town.
In addition to the logistical challenges posed by the flooding, the Bulileka community is facing serious health risks. Vakaruru Cavuilati, the Divisional Health Inspector for the Northern region, has cautioned residents against disposing of household waste in drains and creeks, as this practice only worsens blockages and heightens the chances of flooding.
Mr. Cavuilati warned that flooded areas can lead to increased risks of illnesses such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhea. As a result, the residents of Boca continue to call for prompt action to resolve the drainage issues, aiming to safeguard their community from further inconveniences and potential health crises.
