Residents of Boca, Bulileka in Labasa are expressing their frustration over ongoing flash floods that result from inadequate drainage systems in the area. Jai Karan, a local resident, has called out the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) for its inaction regarding drain maintenance despite requests for assistance over a span of 25 years.

“Blocked drains have led to regular flash flooding for decades. We urge the FRA to take immediate steps to resolve this issue and help prevent further flooding incidents that impact all of our residents,” Mr. Karan stated.

Frequent flooding affects the Boca Loop Circular Road, putting motorists at risk during heavy rains as they attempt to navigate to their workplaces or Labasa Town. Beyond the inconvenience, residents are also facing substantial health risks.

Vakaruru Cavuilati, the Divisional Health Inspector Northern, has cautioned residents against dumping household waste into drains and creeks, which worsens blockages and heightens the risk of flooding. He emphasized that flooded areas increase the likelihood of waterborne diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhoea.

The community remains hopeful that their ongoing appeals for prompt action will lead to long-term solutions that not only mitigate flooding but also protect public health.

In summary, residents in Boca, Labasa, are calling for the FRA to address longstanding drainage issues that contribute to flooding and health risks in their area. They hope for swift action to ensure better living conditions for their community. This serves as a reminder of the importance of infrastructure maintenance and community health awareness.
