Residents of Boca, Bulileka, in Labasa, are voicing their concerns about persistent flash floods linked to poor drainage systems in their community. Jai Karan, a local resident, expressed frustration over the lack of action from the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), which he claims has neglected requests for over two decades to address the blocked drains that contribute to flooding.

Karan stated, “Blocked drains have caused flash floods for decades. We urge the FRA to address this issue and help prevent flooding, which affects all our residents.” The flooding has become a significant problem, frequently obstructing Boca Loop Circular Road and forcing motorists to navigate hazardous conditions during heavy rainfall to access their workplaces or Labasa Town.

The suburban area of Bulileka, located just a few kilometers from Labasa, not only faces the challenges of flooding but also the associated health risks. Vakaruru Cavuilati, the Divisional Health Inspector for Northern, has cautioned residents against discarding household waste into drains and creeks, as this practice worsens drain blockages and elevates the risk of flooding.

Mr. Cavuilati emphasized, “Flooded areas heighten the risk of leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhoea (LTDD).” The ongoing flooding in Boca heightens the community’s vulnerability to these health hazards.

The residents remain hopeful for prompt action to resolve the drainage issues and protect their community from further disruptions and potential health concerns. Their continued advocacy underscores the importance of community engagement in addressing local infrastructure challenges.

In summary, the persistent flooding due to inadequate drainage in Boca, Bulileka, has prompted residents to seek urgent assistance from authorities. The community’s proactive approach in seeking change reflects their determination to create a safer living environment. Positive steps towards improved drainage infrastructure could significantly enhance the quality of life for the residents and safeguard their well-being.
