The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has issued a significant warning regarding the issue of overcrowding on vessels. Chief Executive Officer Joeli Cawaki emphasized that such practices will not be tolerated, particularly as families gear up to travel to distant islands and marine areas to celebrate Christmas.
Mr. Cawaki highlighted that vessel owners who choose to overload their boats with passengers and cargo will face serious repercussions. He pointed out that the organization routinely observes increased instances of overloading during this festive period.
Every vessel is issued a service certificate that clearly indicates the maximum number of passengers it is permitted to carry. MSAF is committed to enforcing these regulations and announced that staff will be present at jetties to prevent overloaded vessels from departing.
To ensure adherence to safety regulations, MSAF will enhance monitoring efforts, especially since many will be traveling during this busy season. This increased vigilance involves counting passengers and checking cargo against the manifest in collaboration with ship owners.
This initiative not only aims to ensure the safety of all passengers but also fosters responsible travel practices during the holiday season, reassuring families that their journeys will be conducted safely and within regulations.
In summary, MSAF’s proactive measures to curb overcrowding will enhance marine safety and provide peace of mind for travelers this festive season, highlighting the importance of following safety protocols.
