Students at Rewa Secondary School and St. Joseph’s Primary School recently celebrated a remarkable enhancement in their transportation options with the donation of a 23-foot fiberglass half-cabin boat. The Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, officially handed over the boat, which is valued at $24,000, during a ceremony held on Wednesday. This donation, which is equipped with a 40hp outboard motor, was fully funded by the Ministry of Education, showcasing the government’s commitment to improving educational facilities in remote regions.

During the ceremony, Minister Radrodro highlighted the critical role of transportation for students, especially those living in maritime zones. He pointedly remarked, “Today marks a significant milestone for Rewa Secondary School. We are proud to fulfill this long-awaited promise. This boat is a crucial step in improving the quality of transport for students in these areas.” This initiative is part of the government’s broader objective to ensure equitable access to education for all students across Fiji, particularly for those in hard-to-reach locations.

To sustain the new boat’s operational costs, which include fuel and maintenance, funding will be provided through the Free Education Grant (FEG). The management of the school will oversee the care of the boat, ensuring it remains in optimal condition. This investment reaffirms the Coalition Government’s ongoing dedication to offering every child access to quality education, irrespective of geographical constraints.

Recent similar initiatives, such as the delivery of a comparable boat to Navesi Primary School in Udu Village, highlight a strategic effort to address the challenges faced by students in isolated areas, further reflecting the government’s commitment to educational equity.

The introduction of this boat not only enhances transportation for students but also strengthens the sense of community and governmental support for addressing the needs of remote schools. It represents a hopeful advancement in improving educational opportunities for all children throughout Fiji, fostering a brighter future for those in these communities.
