Students at Rewa Secondary School and St. Joseph’s Primary School celebrated a significant improvement in their transportation capabilities with the recent donation of a 23-foot fiberglass half-cabin boat. Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro delivered the boat, valued at $24,000, during an official handover ceremony held on Wednesday. This boat, equipped with a 40hp outboard motor, was entirely funded by the Ministry of Education, underlining the government’s strong commitment to enhancing educational facilities in remote areas.
During the ceremony, Minister Radrodro emphasized the importance of transportation for students, particularly in maritime zones. He stated, “Today marks a significant milestone for Rewa Secondary School. We are proud to fulfill this long-awaited promise. This boat is a crucial step in improving the quality of transport for students in these areas.” This initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of providing equitable access to education for all students across Fiji, especially those in hard-to-reach locations.
The operational costs for the new boat, including fuel and maintenance, will be managed through the Free Education Grant (FEG). School management will oversee the boat’s upkeep, ensuring that it remains in good working order. This investment highlights the Coalition Government’s ongoing dedication to ensuring that every child has access to quality education, regardless of geographical barriers.
Similar initiatives have been noted in the past, such as the recent delivery of a comparable boat to Navesi Primary School in Udu Village. These efforts demonstrate a comprehensive strategy focused on overcoming the challenges faced by students in isolated areas, reaffirming the government’s commitment to educational equity.
The addition of this boat not only facilitates transportation for students but also reinforces the sense of community and support from the government in addressing the needs of remote schools. It symbolizes a positive step forward in improving educational opportunities for all children across Fiji.
