The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the late boxer Ubayd Haider is still ongoing, with the Board of Inquiry (BOI) facing delays in finalizing its report. In a recent press conference held in Nadi, BOI chairman Edwin Wainiqolo acknowledged that progress has been hindered due to challenges in engaging with various stakeholders involved in the South Pacific Boxing promotion that took place in October.
Out of 17 identified stakeholders, the BOI has successfully interviewed 12 over three weeks of investigation. However, difficulties remain with the five stakeholders still pending, many of whom are located overseas. Wainiqolo noted that the complexities have escalated in recent weeks, as some stakeholders have engaged with their legal practitioners, further complicating the inquiry process.
Additionally, Wainiqolo pointed out that the involvement of international stakeholders, such as the International Boxing Organization (IBO), has created further challenges. The IBO has stated they will not participate in the investigation due to their organizational statutes, prompting the BOI to seek guidance from the office of the solicitor general on navigating these grey areas.
At this time, key questions surrounding the investigation—such as the possibility of foul play, the results of post-mortem examinations, adherence to medical protocols, and potential existing medical conditions of Haider—remain unanswered. Wainiqolo has assured the public that these issues will be addressed once the inquiry reaches a conclusion.
The continuation of this investigation reflects the commitment to transparency and justice for Ubayd Haider’s family, as they seek clarity about their loved one’s tragic passing. As the inquiry progresses, there remains hope that all stakeholders will cooperate fully to achieve a thorough understanding of the events that unfolded.
In summary, while the investigation into Ubayd Haider’s case has encountered delays, there is a strong commitment from the BOI to pursue answers and ensure accountability in the boxing community.
