The Sukanacagi Blue Light Brothers 7s team, comprising young men from Vitogo and Naiviyago in Lautoka, is making their debut at the Fiji Sports Council U20 7s tournament currently taking place at Lawaqa Park. Historically, the team has concentrated on fifteens rugby and local club matches under the Lautoka Rugby Union, marking this as their first foray into the 7s format.

The team name, “Blue Light,” symbolizes not just their identity but is also part of a wider youth empowerment initiative organized by the Fiji Police Force in collaboration with New Zealand’s Blue Light organization. This program is designed to foster a bridge between law enforcement and the youth, enabling them to cultivate leadership skills and adopt positive lifestyles.

Pastor Aliveo Qereqeretabua, associated with the Fiji Police Force in Vitogo, highlighted the significant role of the program in uplifting youth. “Engaging them in sports is an excellent approach to steer them away from drugs and other illegal activities,” he stated. He proudly acknowledged that the team members are unemployed young individuals from Vitogo and Naiviyago, sharing pride in their participation in the tournament.

Through their journey in rugby, the Sukanacagi Blue Light Brothers are not only honing their skills on the field but also creating a tighter-knit, more resilient community.

This initiative offers hope, showcasing how sports can serve as a powerful tool for youth development and community bonding, leading them towards brighter futures.

In summary, the Blue Light Brothers’ participation in this tournament highlights the positive impact of sports on youth development and community cohesion. It symbolizes a promising step towards empowering young people by providing them with opportunities to thrive in a supportive environment.
