The Sukanacagi Blue Light Brothers 7s team, composed of young men from the Vitogo and Naiviyago communities in Lautoka, is making its debut at the Fiji Sports Council U20 7s tournament currently taking place at Lawaqa Park. While traditionally focused on fifteens rugby and local club competitions within the Lautoka Rugby Union, this marks the team’s first venture into the 7s format.

The name “Blue Light” signifies more than just their team; it is part of a youth empowerment initiative led by the Fiji Police Force in collaboration with New Zealand’s Blue Light organization. This program seeks to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and youth, encouraging leadership development and positive decision-making.

Pastor Aliveo Qereqeretabua, affiliated with the Fiji Police Force in Vitogo, underscored the importance of the program in mentoring young people. He stated, “Involving them in sports is a great way to keep them away from drugs and other illegal activities.” Many of these young individuals are unemployed, and Pastor Qereqeretabua expressed pride in their participation in the tournament.

Through their journey in rugby, the Sukanacagi Blue Light Brothers are not only honing their athletic skills but also fostering a sense of community and connection among the youth.

This story reflects a positive initiative to uplift the youth while promoting healthy activities that keep them engaged and away from negative influences. The team’s participation in the tournament is a significant step toward creating opportunities for personal growth and community involvement.

In summary, the formation of the Sukanacagi Blue Light Brothers 7s team represents an impactful youth initiative combining sports and community support to pave the way for a brighter future.
