The New Zealand Black Caps faced a challenging start to their T20 series against Sri Lanka, suffering a four-wicket defeat in the first match held in Dambulla. Following their impressive 3-0 test series victory in India, the Black Caps showcased a different lineup but found themselves struggling against the home team.
The match served as a stark reminder of Sri Lanka’s formidable home advantage, where the Black Caps had previously experienced a 2-0 series defeat in tests. New Zealand’s batting faltered as they were bowled out for just 135 runs in the final over of their innings, thanks to a stellar performance by Sri Lankan spinners. Dunith Wellalage and Nuwan Thusara were particularly effective, taking three and two wickets respectively.
While Michael Bracewell managed to score 27 runs, it was Zachary Foulkes’ late innings performance that brought some momentum, finishing the game with an unbeaten 27 runs off 16 balls. However, the Sri Lankan side remained composed throughout their chase and easily reached a total of 140-6, sealing the victory with an over to spare. Captain Charith Asalanka played a crucial role, scoring a steady 35 not out.
In a bright spot for the New Zealand team, Foulkes excelled with the ball as well, taking 3 wickets for 20 runs in his three overs, showing promise in conditions that typically favor spin bowlers.
The second and final T20 match is scheduled for Monday at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, followed by a three-match ODI series. It’s worth noting that New Zealand is currently fielding a younger squad, with many key players returning home to prepare for the upcoming test series against England.
As the Black Caps continue to develop their squad depth, this experience could prove invaluable in the future. With another chance to bounce back in the next T20 match, there’s hope that the team will learn and adapt quickly to secure a better result.
