Federal safety investigators have successfully recovered the “black boxes” from the wreckage of a UPS cargo plane that tragically crashed during takeoff at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals. The incident occurred Tuesday evening, shortly after the aircraft, an MD-11-F model built in 1991, departed en route to Honolulu with three crew members onboard.
During the flight, a significant fireball erupted from the left wing of the plane, leading to the detachment of one of the aircraft’s three engines as it rolled down the runway. Following the crash, the plane was entirely engulfed in flames, creating a debris field that spanned approximately half a mile and igniting fires at nearby structures, including a petroleum recycling facility.
Inman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), noted that the recovered flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder appeared intact and could provide crucial information about the crash circumstances. The incident has not only caused devastating loss of life, with at least six fatalities confirmed on the ground and nearly a dozen others injured, but also disrupted operations at UPS’s Worldport facility, critical for air shipments globally.
In light of this tragedy, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency to expedite the response efforts at the crash site. Emergency personnel, including around 200 firefighters and 50 trucks, bravely battled the extensive blaze that filled the skies with thick black smoke. While the toll of this event is profound, Beshear remarked that the situation could have been significantly worse, given the proximity of populated areas to the crash site, and emphasized the urgency of assessing the full impact of the incident.
