The Minister for Women and Children, Lynda Tabuya, has advocated for a united effort between the Government and the Opposition to enhance human rights in Fiji. Following the commemoration of International Human Rights Day, Ms. Tabuya emphasized the need for collaboration to address the diverse needs of Fijians.
“We must continue to reach across the aisle to achieve bipartisanship on issues impacting our citizens,” she stated. Ms. Tabuya highlighted the importance of developing solid partnerships within Parliament, advocating for more frequent cooperation in addressing critical issues.
She acknowledged the existing teamwork among government members in various standing committees but expressed a desire for increased participation from opposition members in government-initiated endeavors. An example she provided was the inclusion of opposition representatives in the Anti-Pornography Task Force, which aims to combat online exploitation, particularly concerning children.
Ms. Tabuya stressed the necessity for both sides to be held accountable regarding human rights matters in Fiji. “As the Minister, I must be accountable, and the government as a whole should be as well,” she pointed out.
