Bipartisan Talks on Fiji’s Constitution: What’s at Stake?

Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized the need to clarify the Opposition’s role in facilitating bipartisan discussions regarding the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. In light of ongoing misinformation, particularly from the government, Seruiratu stated that the Opposition has consistently been open to dialogue on national matters.

Seruiratu noted that significant concerns have arisen around the government’s approach, especially after a recent meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, where key opposition parties like the National Federation Party (NFP) and SODELPA were notably absent. This absence has raised questions about the government’s true intentions and transparency in the legislative process.

He accused the government of employing questionable tactics, including what he described as “enticements and inducements” that border on bribery to sway opposition members. Seruiratu found it alarming that some members who initially supported the suspension motion had to reconsider their stance upon realizing that the proposed changes threaten the voice of the Fijian people.

In previous related discussions, highlighted by other opposition figures, there have been calls for clarity on what specific amendments are being proposed and the importance of a transparent approach to constitutional changes. Independent MP Alvick Maharaj also voiced concerns about personal gain influencing certain votes and advocated for the establishment of a Parliamentary Select Committee to ensure public input on constitutional matters.

The current political climate indicates a desire for open and inclusive governance that reflects the voices of all Fijians. The ongoing dialogue between the government and the opposition holds promise for fostering transparency and ensuring that the legislative process honors the aspirations of the citizens.

Despite the tensions, there is a glimmer of hope that collaborative discussions ultimately lead to meaningful constitutional reforms that better align with the values and rights of the Fijian populace. As political dynamics evolve, such dialogue is crucial for creating a more engaged and representative democratic environment in Fiji.
