Biman Prasad’s Bold Defense: The Cost of Transparency in Government

Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has firmly defended the expenditure of $88,597 for the tribunal investigation into Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde. Describing criticisms from opponents as hypocritical, Prasad highlighted the importance of ensuring a “proper, transparent process” amidst ongoing investigations.

In his remarks, Prof Prasad emphasized that critics appear to forget the lack of accountability that characterized previous government administrations. He specifically pointed to the unresolved commission of inquiry regarding the former auditor-general during Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s tenure, questioning the fate of the report and pointing out the absence of transparency in past dismissals, particularly that of former solicitor-general Sharvada Sharma.

Prasad criticized the former attorney-general for calling attention to the tribunal’s report while it was still under consideration by the President. He stated that some costs are necessary to uphold transparency, reaffirming the government’s commitment to accountability—a stark contrast to prior practices.

The tribunal, established on March 5, 2024, has faced scrutiny, particularly concerning new allegations about Pryde’s unauthorized superannuation payments amounting to approximately $1,000 monthly since 2012. This ongoing investigation is pivotal for reinforcing trust in Fiji’s judicial and governmental processes and improving transparency, which is essential for public confidence.

As the tribunal continues its work, there is a shared hope that its findings and the commitment to accountability will strengthen governance in Fiji, embodying an essential step towards restoring public trust in legal institutions and government integrity. A successful outcome from this thorough and rigorous process may indeed pave the way for a more transparent future in Fijian governance.
