Fiji’s Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, has staunchly defended the expenditure of $88,597 for the tribunal investigation into the Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde. Responding to critics, he labeled the backlash as hypocritical, pointing out that some critics appear to overlook the significant transparency issues evident during previous administrations.

In his statements, Prof Prasad specifically referenced the unresolved commission of inquiry involving the former auditor-general from Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s tenure, questioning the absence of its findings. He further highlighted concerns over the dismissal of former solicitor-general Sharvada Sharma, indicating that such events lacked the scrutiny now demanded regarding the tribunal report.

The Finance Minister remarked on the former attorney-general’s calls for the tribunal’s report while it awaited consideration from the President. He said, “Sometimes there is a cost that you have to incur for a proper, transparent process,” emphasizing the necessity for accountability and transparency in Fiji’s governance.

The tribunal, established on March 5, 2024, has seen its mandate extended twice due to ongoing investigations. Notably, it is examining allegations concerning Pryde’s unauthorized superannuation payments, which reportedly amount to about $1,000 monthly from March 2012 to July 2023. As the tribunal progresses, it has conducted 29 briefings and several hearings, underscoring its commitment to a thorough and transparent inquiry.

A sense of optimism surrounds the investigation, as its comprehensive nature is viewed as essential for restoring public trust in Fiji’s judicial and governmental processes. The ongoing tribunal work encapsulates a vital step towards fortifying accountability and transparency in governance, embodying a hopeful vision for a more trusted legal system in the nation.

In summary, while questions about the tribunal’s expenses have arisen, they represent a critical commitment to due process and transparency. This initiative seeks to enhance public confidence and signifies a forward momentum in Fiji’s governance, underscoring the importance of accountability and integrity in public institutions.
