Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad has challenged the assertions made by Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube and other politicians regarding the government’s capability to tackle the rising cost of living. Prasad responded to Narube’s criticisms that prioritized pay increments over pressing issues faced by ordinary families.
Narube has accused the government of neglecting the escalating costs of living, rampant corruption, a worsening drug crisis, and increasing national debt. He argued that while the cost of living rises, the Minister of Finance claimed the government is powerless to act and instead blamed citizens for their high expectations. Narube emphasized the urgency of addressing these critical matters, declaring that corruption is on the rise and the government lacks a cohesive strategy to combat these challenges.
In defense of the government, Professor Prasad pointed to positive economic indicators, including a robust growth rate of approximately 3.8 percent, a decrease in inflation, increasing investments, thriving businesses, and a booming tourism sector. He asserted that their fiscal policies have steered the national debt toward a sustainable trajectory and criticized Narube for failing to propose any feasible solutions to these societal issues.
Prasad urged Narube, given his background as a former governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, to honestly evaluate government data and policies, suggesting that an informed perspective could lead to more constructive criticisms. He also highlighted improvements in income levels and living standards, alongside increased funding for essential services such as health, water, and agriculture.
On the matter of drugs, Prasad noted the establishment of the Narcotics Bureau, which plays a key role in significant drug seizures. The government is also focusing on creating drug rehabilitation centers in collaboration with various stakeholders, including health services, families, schools, and NGOs, to foster a community-based approach to combat substance abuse.
Overall, Prasad maintained that the government is active and committed to addressing these pressing challenges while improving the lives of citizens.
This article underscores the importance of constructive dialogue in political discourse. While differences in opinion are inevitable, focusing on collaborative solutions can drive progress for communities facing challenges. By emphasizing achievements and partnership approaches, there is hope that the government can continue to improve living standards and combat issues like drug abuse effectively.
